SATW Institute

The best short crash course for learning the crafts of travel writing, guidebook authorship, and travel photography.

The SATW Institute for Travel & Guidebook Writing sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers is held annually in Orlando, Florida in January.

The program begins on Friday with a reception, continues on Saturday and Sunday with 15 hours of intensive instruction, and ends late Sunday afternoon.

The Institute's faculty of six or more experienced, successful travel writers, guidebook authors and photographers shares their decades of wisdom and experience with amateur and professional writers, avid travelers and journal-keepers in all aspects of travel and guidebook writing and photography.

Topics include:

  1. A survey of travel and guidebook writing markets

  2. Writing successful proposals

  3. Contracts and negotiations

  4. Editor-publisher relations

  5. How the work gets done

  6. Photography

  7. Self publishing

  8. Marketing

The registration fee includes tuition, course materials, most meals, breaks and social events; it does not include lodging or transportation to and from the host hotel. The host hotel offers discounted rooms to Institute registrants. Requests can be made for shared rooms.
